A group of former judges, military officers, and retired government officials expresses strong criticism of the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi over allegations of vote-rigging

New Delhi – The Congress party is persistently attempting to tarnish the image of constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission, thereby generating unnecessary distrust within the nation’s democratic framework. In a strongly worded open letter, 272 retired judges, military officers, and government officials from across the country criticised the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party.

The letter states that the Election Commission is the most vital pillar of India’s electoral system, and casting aspersions on it weakens public confidence. The signatories include 16 former judges, 123 retired government officials (among them 14 former ambassadors), and 133 retired Army officers.
Rahul Gandhi has, until now, conducted three press conferences alleging vote-rigging and accusing the Election Commission of acting as the “B-team” of the Modi Government.
The letter emphasises that political disagreements are inherent in a democracy; however, repeatedly levelling unsubstantiated accusations against constitutional institutions is contrary to the national interest and undermines the credibility of the democratic process.
