Dhaka – As campaigning begins ahead of the national elections slated for February 2026, violence has erupted in various parts of Bangladesh. In Chittagong, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for the Chittagong-8 constituency, Ershad Ullah, was seriously injured when gunfire erupted during a rally.

One person, identified as Sarwar Hossain (alias “Babla”), a documented criminal suspect, was killed in the same incident. The interim government has strongly condemned the attack, ordered a full investigation, and urged all political parties to maintain peace.

Initial police findings indicate that Ershad Ullah may not have been the primary target of the shooting; rather, Sarwar appears to have been the intended target.

BNP accuses Jamat-e-Islami

The BNP has accused Jamat-e-Islami of disrupting the electoral atmosphere. BNP candidate Anwar-ul-Haq stated that Jamat-e-Islami and certain advisers to the government were vitiating the political environment in the country. He further alleged that some foreign agencies might also be involved in this.
