2020 Delhi riots were a pre-planned conspiracy to topple the government, says police in Supreme Court

  • 177-page affidavit filed by Delhi Police

  • Opposition to bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam

New Delhi – The Delhi Police have filed a 177-page affidavit in the Supreme Court regarding the 2020 Delhi riots, opposing the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, and other accused. The police have stated that the riots were not a result of “sudden protests”, but a “carefully orchestrated conspiracy to overthrow the government”. According to the affidavit, the violence was deliberately planned to disrupt social harmony and tarnish India’s image at the international level.

Conspiracy linked to Trump’s India visit

The affidavit further mentions that the violence was intentionally timed to coincide with the visit of then US President Donald Trump to India. The objective, it states, was to attract international media attention and project a negative image of India. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests were used as a “tool to promote extremist and anti-national ideology”, the police have claimed.
