‘My statement was misinterpreted !’ : Mamata Banerjee claims

Mamata Banerjee issues clarification on her statement about the gang rape incident

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata (Bengal) – Speaking on the recent gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, “Girls should not move around at night. The college administration bears full responsibility for this incident.” Following severe criticism of her statement, Banerjee attempted to clarify her remarks, saying, “The media has distorted my statement. The media asks me questions, and I respond to them. Do not turn this into politics.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • Every politician, after making an objectionable remark, blames the media and offers such a clarification — Mamata Banerjee has done the same.
  • Instead of defending her words, Mamata Banerjee should have admitted the poor state of law and order in her State and explained what measures she is taking to protect women.
