A ‘law banning religious conversions’ should be enacted to curb incidents of religious conversions in Maharashtra !

Demand at the awareness meeting of the Katkari community

Raigad, Maharashtra – At an awareness meeting of the Katkari community held in Karjat, a demand was made to bring into force a ‘law banning religious conversions’ to curb the increasing cases of conversion in Maharashtra. The meeting was organised by awakened youth and women from the tribal-Katkari community, and discussions were held on the growing number of conversions.

During the meeting, the youth of the Katkari community stated that…

1. In certain hamlets and settlements of Raigad district, Christian missionary organisations have been active for several years. These organisations lure poor and uneducated families into conversion by offering financial and medical assistance.

2. Some Hindus in the community record themselves as ‘Hindu’ in official documents to continue availing Government benefits. Though their names appear Hindu, they follow Christian religious practices. This is harming the religious and cultural identity of the community.

3. The decline in the Hindu population has led to increasing social imbalance.

4.  Considering the large-scale conversions that have taken place in some northeastern States, a similar situation could arise in Maharashtra too. Hence, it is imperative that such a law be enacted without delay.

Editorial Perspective

Such repeated demands should not have to be made; the Government itself should take the initiative to enact this law.
