Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s hardline stance

New Delhi — Union Home Minister Mr Amit Shah took a blunt position, saying that the rise in the Muslim population in India is not due to higher fertility rates but due to infiltration !
He said this while speaking at an event here, reading out population figures for Hindus and Muslims from 1951 to 2011. He noted that in 1951 Hindus were 84.1 per cent and Muslims 9.8 per cent; in 1971 the figures were 82.72 per cent and 11 per cent respectively; in 1991 they were 81 per cent and 12.12 per cent; and by 2011 Hindus had fallen to 79 per cent while Muslims had risen to 14.2 per cent.

Key points advanced by the Union Home Minister !
1. The growth rate of the Muslim population in India stood at 24.6 per cent, while the Hindu population declined by 4.5 per cent.

2. By contrast, in Pakistan Hindu population fell from 13 per cent in 1947 to just 1.73 per cent today alongside other minorities; likewise in Bangladesh Hindus have fallen from around 22 per cent to 7.9 per cent. He added: “As a Hindu, my claim on India is no greater than the claim of Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh.”

3. Infiltration should not be viewed through a political lens and must not receive political patronage. “We will identify infiltrators and deport them. Our country is not a hostel to admit everyone in the world; that cannot sustain a country,” he said.
4. The BJP (formerly the Jana Sangh) adopted the slogan from 1950: “Find the infiltrators, remove them and deport them.” We will identify infiltrators, delete them from the electoral rolls and send them out of the country.

5. Defining who the infiltrators are: those who entered India illegally for economic or other reasons despite not being subjected to religious persecution.
6. The issues of infiltration and the Election Commission’s updating of voter rolls — the ‘special intensive reform drive’ (voter list verification process) — should not be treated politically. These are national imperatives and no one should interfere; this is the Election Commission’s institutional duty.
7. Allowing infiltrators whose names are on the voter list to become part of the country’s political process would corrupt the spirit of the Constitution. The right to vote should be reserved only for those who are citizens of this country.
“Congress opposes this because its voter base is being eroded” — Shah
Criticising the Congress, the Home Minister said the party is acting arbitrarily because its vote bank is being hollowed out. He added: “If you have a problem, approach the courts. I ask all citizens: who should decide who will be the Prime Minister or the chief minister of this country — should anyone other than the country’s citizens have that right ?”
