Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Malayalam actor Shane Nigam’s upcoming film Hal reportedly contains a scene showing ‘beef biryani being eaten’. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has shown unusual sensitivity in this case and, among 15 suggested changes, has asked for this particular scene to be removed. However, the filmmakers have challenged this directive by filing a petition in the Kerala High Court.
According to the film’s public relations officer, the CBFC has asked for the removal of two scenes – one showing ‘saluting the flag’ and another depicting ‘eating beef biryani’. The officer claimed that the film does not actually show beef biryani and that the Board’s objection was based on a misunderstanding. The Hal film was screened for Board members on 10 September.
Editorial PerspectiveTo claim that the Censor Board misunderstood the film after an official screening is a naïve defence. The court should direct the filmmakers to honour the religious sentiments of Hindus rather than hide behind the pretext of freedom of expression. |
