Malegaon Bomb Blast Timeline

Sadhvi Pragya Singh

1.On 29th September 2008, a bomb exploded in a motorcycle in Malegaon. The incident resulted in the deaths of 7 people and injuries to 92 others.

2.The then UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government announced that the investigation would be handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The head of the squad at the time was Hemant Karkare, who died in the 2008 terrorist attacks.

3.Since the motorcycle carrying the explosives was registered in the name of former MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, the Police arrested her. In the following days, several others were arrested from Madhya Pradesh and from Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra.

4.On 20thJanuary 2009, a chargesheet was filed against 14 individuals. Provisions of MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) were also applied.

5.In 2010, the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

6.In 2017, although the special court allowed the removal of MCOCA charges, it did not acquit Sadhvi Pragya Singh and six others. The trial continued against them under other sections and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

7.In December 2018, the actual trial began against Sadhvi Pragya Singh and the seven main accused. A total of 323 witnesses were presented in the case. Of these, 34 turned hostile and some witnesses died during the trial period.

8.Among the 323 witnesses examined, 34 turned hostile. Many of them told the court that the Anti-Terrorism Squad forced them to give statements.

9.After 17 years, on 31stJuly, the verdict was delivered and all 7 accused were acquitted.
