Information revealed through the right to information !

New Delhi – In the last 5 years, 65 aircraft in India have had their engines fail while take-off or in the air, according to the information provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation under the Right to Information Act. This means that at least one aircraft engine fails every month. In all these cases, the pilots were able to land the aircraft on one engine and reach the nearest airport.

The information further states that in the 17 months from January 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025, 11 aircraft received ‘mayday’ calls. In this, the aircraft was requested to land in an emergency due to technical failure. Out of these, 4 aircraft landed in Bhagyanagar.

What is a ‘May Day Call’ ?

Mede is a French word. It means ‘save me’. This call is usually sent by radio to air traffic control or other nearby airports. It is used to request immediate assistance, so that an emergency situation can be dealt with.
