Since the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, 2 lakh people applied for marriage registration

90 people applied for ‘live-in relationship’ (living together of a man and a woman without solemnisation of their marriage)

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – The Uniform Civil Code came into effect in the state of Uttarakhand from January 27 of this year. Under this law, citizens had 6 months to register marriages, divorces and ‘live-in relationships’. This period ends on July 27. Due to this, there has been a rush of people for this registration.

1.The Uniform Civil Code has made it mandatory to register marriages, divorces and live-in relationships taking place between March 26, 2010 and January 27, 2025. The purpose of this law is to ‘ensure equal rights for all citizens’. The objectives of this law are to ensure gender equality, stop polygamy, and bring transparency in live-in relationships.

2.So far, applications have been received for more than 2 lakh marriages and 90 live-in relationships. They have been registered. Few people have shown the courage to bring up live-in relationships. The Government’s decision in this case has been challenged in the High Court, and it will be heard on July 14.
