Dhaka (Bangladesh) – At the University of Chittagong, the promotion of Dr Kushal Baran Chakraborty, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit, has been blocked. Not only was his promotion halted, but he was also reportedly pressured to resign.

1. On July 4th , Dr Chakraborty was invited for an interview as part of the promotion process. At the same time, members of the radical Islamic student group Islami Chhatra Shibir gathered outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office and created a ruckus. Due to their opposition, the interview was cancelled, and Dr. Chakraborty’s promotion was nullified.

2. The students not only demanded that his promotion be stopped but also called for his expulsion from the university. They locked down the university building and staged an aggressive blockade.

3. Habibullah Khalid, a leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir, barged into the Vice-Chancellor’s office and behaved aggressively and disrespectfully with Dr. Chakraborty. The professor was held hostage in the office for nearly 3 hours, during which he was mentally harassed. He was later escorted home in a university vehicle.

4. Dr. Chakraborty is associated with Sanatani Jagaran Jot and Sanatan Vidyarthi Sansad, organizations that speak out against atrocities on the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. It is believed that attempts were made to defame him by implicating him in a false murder case.

5. Acting Registrar Mohammad Saiful Islam defended the students’ actions, dismissing them as a reaction to “past actions.” Dr. Shamim Uddin, a member of the university administration,
said that when the students raised allegations of murder against Dr. Chakraborty, the promotion board decided to cancel the process.

Editorial Perspective

Just as Hindus have been nearly wiped out in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a similar fate awaits Hindus in Bangladesh in the coming years. If India fails to take strong action against religious extremism, the same will unfold here. Hindus in India must take serious note of this !
