Guwahati – Assam Police raided 112 shops selling beef illegally across the state. Over 1,000 kg of beef was seized and 132 people were arrested in the operation. The operation comes amid a controversy over beef and cow slaughter in Assam.

1. After cow remains were found near temples in many places in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this was an attempt to spread unrest during the Eid period.

2. The Assam Animal Husbandry Act, 2021 does not ban the consumption of beef; but the sale of beef within a 5 km radius of temples or Hindu-dominated areas is prohibited.

3. Last year, the Chief Minister announced a complete ban on eating beef in public places.
