US Government is undermining democracy

Former US President Barack Obama criticises the Trump administration

Barack Obama and Donald Trump

Washington DC (USA) – The people currently running the US Government are weakening the core principles of democracy. In a democracy, it is important to oppose wrongdoing both from within and outside the Government—but that no longer seems to be happening, said former US President Barack Obama in a recent statement.

He was speaking at an event in Hartford, Connecticut. Obama compared the United States to countries like Hungary, where elections are held but the voice of the people is not respected, and leaders act arbitrarily. Issuing a warning, Obama said, ‘The US too is heading down a path where the true spirit of law and democracy is being weakened’. He cited the 2020 US Presidential Election, in which Joe Biden won, but defeated candidate Donald Trump made false claims of fraud.

Editorial Perspective

Obama should also acknowledge how many countries’ democracies the US has destabilised, leading to anarchy. Furthermore, how many authoritarian regimes has the US supported, encouraging them to sponsor terrorism in democratic nations, must also be revealed.
