Christian missionaries active for conversion of Varkaris; Bible pamphlets distributed during the Vari

Pune, 22^ndJune (Report) – Agents of Christian missionaries have become active during the Vari (the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur) with the aim of converting Varkaris, who are chanting the name of Vitthal as they head for His darshan (Holy visit) in Pandharpur. It has come to light that they are distributing pamphlets containing excerpts from the Bible and inviting the innocent Varkaris to worship Jesus.

On 22^ndJune, as the palanquins (palkhis) departed from Pune toward Pandharpur, a woman was seen distributing such pamphlets at Fatimanagar in the morning. A vigilant member of the ‘Shri Shivpratishthan Hindusthan’, who are known as ‘Dharkari’ noticed this and stopped the woman from continuing her distribution among the Varkari procession.

Christian missionaries have used women to distribute these pamphlets and to disguise their intention, the pamphlets appear to promote de-addiction by including contact information for support. One of the pamphlets quotes the Bible: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish.” This verse was cited along with references to Scripture.
