The Government can cancel a contract in the interest of national security : Union Govt

Case of Cancellation of Contract with Turkish Company for Cargo Handling at Indian Airports

New Delhi –The Turkish firm, Çelebi Aviation, which used to operate the airport ground operations at nine airports across India, has now been removed from ground handling and cargo operations amid the rising calls to boycott Turkish goods and tourism.

In the last few days, Indians have been calling each other to boycott Turkish goods and tourism after the nation supported Pakistan over India after the Pahalgam terror attack and the Operation Sindoor, which gave rise to the India-Pakistan conflict.

On 15th May, the Civil Aviation Security Department of India cancelled the contract awarded to the Celebi Airport Services. In response, the company filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. A hearing was held on 22nd May. During the hearing, the Union Government defended its decision.

Solicitor General Mehta stated that, “When awarding such security contracts, the Government retains full authority. The contract can be cancelled at any time. There may be flaws in the process, but the Government is empowered to take decisions in cases of national emergencies or security threats”.

Editorial Perspective

A question arises – Why did India give a contract concerning airport security to a Turkish company in the first place ? Why doesn’t India handle its own security ?
