Palakkad (Kerala) – Palakkad Municipal Corporation proposes to give the name of RSS Founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar to a particular school where BJP is in power. Congress and CPI (M) have strongly objected to this proposal.
‘Hedgewar’ name was approved by Municipal Corporation to a proposed school for the differently abled children. The opposition corporators questioned “who is Hedgewar?” That caused argument between BJP and opposition party corporators.
Municipal Corporation president and BJP leader Pramila Shashidharan categorically said, “the decision is final. Congress and CPI(M) may protest as much as they can, however, BJP is in power in Palakkad, and we will decide the names to the institutions. Shashidharan reminded them of Variyamkunnath Kunhahammad Haji who was the mastermind of 1921 Mopla massacre and said, “you have named a Malappuramm Town hall after the Haji, was he a freedom fighter?

Palakkad Congress MLA Rahul Mamakuttathil said, “we will oppose this decision at political and legal levels. BJP and RSS can implement their religious views only through violence.
CPI(M) staged a protest outside the Municipal Corporation. Party’s District Secretary E. N. Suresh Babu said, “we will not allow BJP to name the school after Hedgewar. He also accused Congress of not being serious about this protest and said that they were supporting RSS.
Earlier when Hedgewar’s picture was exhibited in Shrikrushnaswami Temple at Kollam, the same controversy had ensued. The temple is under the Devaswom Board of the State government. The Board had ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Editorial PerspectiveWhat is wrong in naming a school H.H. Hedgewar; a great personality of India ? While the names of Gandhi family, who have not served the nation or society in the true sense, are given to many places. |
