Earned only ₹200 crore from milk sales !
New Delhi – The Delhi government has collected ₹5,68.92 crore from excise duty and VAT (Value Added Tax) on liquor sales in the financial year 2024-25. In contrast, revenue from GST (Goods and Services Tax) on milk and milk products stood at ₹209.90 crore. Both figures are as of February. This information was provided in response to a query by BJP MLA Abhay Verma in the Delhi Assembly.
These figures have surfaced at a time when the BJP is accusing the Aam Aadmi Party of involvement in a liquor scam. AAP leaders, including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, have been jailed in connection with the case. This controversy is seen as a key factor behind AAP’s defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections.
Every day, 5.82 lakh litres of liquor are sold in Delhi
In Delhi, 21.27 crore litres of liquor were sold in 2023-24, averaging approximately 5.82 lakh litres per day. In 2022-23, the daily sales figure was 2.58 lakh litres.
Meanwhile, revenue from milk sales stood at ₹300 crore in 2023-24 and ₹365 crore in 2022-23, compared to ₹210 crore in 2024-25 (till February).
Editorial PerspectiveIf these statistics are only for Delhi, then at the national level, there is no doubt that alcohol sales far exceed those of milk. This reflects the current state of India and raises concerns about its future trajectory. |
