Pre-planned attack at Nagpur, will not spare rioters : Dy CM Eknath Shinde

  • Statement tabled in Maharashtra Legislative Council

  • Along with 3 Dy Police Commissioners; 33 Policemen injured

  • Rioters use petrol bombs, swords, axes, stones to attack

  • Hundreds of two-wheelers damaged

Mumbai, 18th March – On 17.03.2025, around 11.00 a.m., Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal staged demonstrations in Nagpur when they set on fire a symbolic image of Aurangzeb made with bundles of hay. The Police, therefore, filed cases against the concerned activists. In the evening, however, a rumour was spread that the symbol that was burnt in the morning had some religious writeup. This led to the gathering of a mob of more than 2000 people, taking to the road, damaging bikes, cars and even houses. The mob also attacked Police in which 3 Dy Police Commissioners and 33 Policemen sustained injuries. The attack was pre-planned and no rioter would be spared, was a statement tabled by Dy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the State Legislative Council at Nagpur while giving information about the riots.

Dy CM Shinde further stated that a mob of 200-250 people, after finishing their ‘namaz’ on Akhtar Road, started raising slogans such as ‘Set fire’ and ‘Destroy’, etc. The Police dispersed them for raising such violent slogans. Some people from the mob came to Ganesh Peth Police Station to file a complaint against Bajrang Dal. At the same time, a mob of 200 people started pelting stones in the Hansapuri area. They even used sticks and weapons to attack. A huge mob gathered at Bhaldarpura attacked the Police. Police burst tear gas shells to bring the situation under control but 33 Policemen were injured in the attack along with 3 Deputy Police Commissioners. Five cases have been filed in this connection. In the riots staged after 8.00 p.m., petrol bombs were hurled and swords were used for attack.

Why is the Intelligence Department and Home Ministry so careless ? – Ambadas Danve, Opposition leader, Legislative Council

The State Intelligence Department and Home Department are incompetent; therefore, the Police couldn’t reach the places of incidents in time. Is the Intelligence Department and Home Department sitting with closed eyes ? A few ruling party ministers are trying to add fuel to the fire. (It shows Ambadas Danave is protecting rioters. Why shouldn’t action be taken against him too ? – Editor) The law-and-order situation in the State has deteriorated. Future riots should be prevented. Discussions should be held on this issue.

The riot-like situation at Nagpur was pre-planned: Pravin Darekar, BJP leader, Legislative Council

The level of glorification of Aurangzeb has considerably increased. Hundreds of bikes were damaged. Many two-wheelers were pulled down and damaged at Bhaldarpura. Many cars were vandalised in the Mahal area. Stones weighing 10 kg were brought in two cars. The social miscreants targeted the Police. The rioters pelted stones from the upper floors as Police started taking them into custody in the Chitnis Park area. One DCP was attacked with an axe. Knives and swords were thrown even at the team from the fire brigade. DCP Niketan Kadam was attacked by the mob, injuring both his hands. Had other Policemen not reached in time, there would have been chaos. Different rumours were spread. There was stone-pelting from higher floors on the Police. It was a pre-planned conspiracy; an attempt to spoil law and order. The mastermind behind the attack needs to be found. I strongly condemn yesterday’s incident. The Government should submit a statement in this regard.

The first riots of such kind in Nagpur: Abhijit Vanjari, MLA- Congress

Such riots never took place in Nagpur earlier. Here, stones were thrown at the people and Police; rioters even entered hospitals and beat up people. It needs to be checked whether anti-social elements took advantage to stage communal riots.

Editorial Perspective

Like in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the people of Maharashtra ask to use bulldozers to demolish houses of rioters to keep them under control.
