Washington DC (USA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived in the US to meet President Donald Trump, refused to end the ongoing war with Russia, leading to a heated argument between the two leaders. An enraged Trump reportedly told Zelenskyy to come back only when the latter is ready for peace. A video of this incident is going viral on social media, sparking global reactions. European nations have expressed support for Zelenskyy and opposed the US’ stance. This conflict has rendered Zelenskyy’s US visit unsuccessful, raising concerns about the future of US-Ukraine relations.

Trump had invited Zelenskyy to the US to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war. Following this, Zelenskyy arrived in America, and their meeting took place in the Oval Office of the White House, attended by the US Vice President JD Vance. Media outlets recorded the conversation during the meeting.
Conversation between Trump and Zelenskyy
During the meeting, Zelenskyy said to JD Vance, ‘You will understand our situation only when you face war. You are surrounded by oceans on all sides’. Trump intervened, saying, ‘Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel. We are trying to solve a problem. You are in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel. We are going to feel very good and very strong. You have allowed yourself to be in a very bad situation. Your country is in big trouble. You are not winning this. You have a damn good chance of coming out okay because of us. You haven’t been alone. You don’t have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards. You are gambling with the lives of millions of people. You are gambling with World War III. We gave you, through this stupid President (Joe Biden), $350 billion. We gave you military equipment. If you didn’t have our military equipment, this war would have been over in two weeks (meaning Ukraine would have been defeated)’.

At this point, Vice President JD Vance, seated beside Trump, also criticised Zelenskyy. He said, ‘It is disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media. Have you ever thanked Trump even once ?’ Zelenskyy attempted to respond, but he was interrupted.
Zelenskyy said, ‘There should be no negotiations with a killer from our region (referring to Russian President Putin). Russia’s madmen have displaced Ukrainian children. In this three-year war, Russia has committed war crimes’.
During the conversation, Zelenskyy also referred to Putin as a ‘killer’, further infuriating President Trump.
Donald Trump’s social media post
Following the incident, Trump posted on social media:’We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace (sic)’.
Zelenskyy’s response
Following the White House incident, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, ‘Until we receive security guarantees against future attacks, Ukraine will not engage in peace talks with Russia. The dispute during my meeting with Trump is not good for either country. Trump must understand that Ukraine cannot change its stance on Russia overnight’.

Global leaders support Ukraine
Following the dispute between Trump and Zelenskyy, European nations have expressed support for Ukraine. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said, ‘We stand with Ukraine in its fight for a just and lasting peace’. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson echoed similar sentiments.
Russia’s reaction : ‘It was miracle that Trump and Vance restrained themselves from hitting Zelenskyy’ !
Moscow (Russia) – Reacting to the conflict between Trump and Zelenskyy, Russia’s foreign ministry commented, ‘Zelenskyy was making false statements in front of Trump at the White House. It was miracle that Trump and Vance restrained themselves from hitting Zelenskyy after hearing his lies’.
Editorial PerspectiveIt has been three years since Russia invaded Ukraine. Neither Russia has secured a clear victory, nor has Ukraine been defeated. It is well known that Ukraine has been able to continue fighting only due to massive financial and military aid from the US. Now, if America itself is urging Ukraine to end the war and threatening to cut military support, it would be wise for Ukraine to reconsider its position. Otherwise, its very existence could be at risk ! |
