New Delhi – On 15.02.2025, there was a stampede to get into a train coming at New Delhi station at night. More than 20 people were injured and 18 travellers died of suffocation. There were huge crowds on platform nos. 14 and 15 of passengers going to Prayagraj for Maha Kumbha as reported by the officers. Trains, viz Magadh Express and Sampark Kranti Express were stationed at platform no 14 and 15 respectively. Two trains going to Prayagraj were running late and the passengers were waiting at these platforms. Amidst this, a special train was announced when passengers started running towards the same resulting in stampede. Delhi Police and railway administration are accusing each other for this unfortunate incident.

Situation before the stampede …

  • Passengers were waiting for the trains going to Prayagraj for Maha Kumbha
  • Two trains going to Prayagraj were running later; therefore, the devotees waiting at platforms 14 and 15 were already restless.
  • Suddenly the railway administration announced a special train and there was commotion as passengers started running on platform nos. 14 to 16.
  • People were walking over each other to reach first. Many people fell while climbing staircases and even on railway tracks.

Statements of Police Officers

Railway Dy Police Commissioner KPS Malhotra said that there were about 8-10 thousand passengers waiting at the platforms for Prayagraj trains. In addition, a new train was announced. There were already 6,000 passengers waiting for that train too; thus, a huge number of passengers were there beyond the capacity of the platforms. The unfortunate incident took place within 15-20 minutes.

Another officer informed that the situation at the railway platforms was worsening from 3.00 p.m. People were unable to even move forward or backward in the huge rush. They were also worried about missing their train which is also a reason for the stampede.

Feedback by onlookers

People present at the place of incident complained that there was no arrangement by either the Police or the administration to control such mammoth crowds at the platforms. Very few policemen were seen at these platforms and people were doing whatever they wanted. This incident could have been avoided had there been adequate Police force available at the platforms.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Undisciplined Indians should also be held responsible along with finding out the possibility of a conspiracy behind the recurring instances of stampede. The responsible officers should be severely punished to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
  • There needs to be proper management at such events where lakhs of people travel. The Government and administration should try to be more efficient.
