New Delhi – The controversy surrounding Waqf properties in Uttar Pradesh continues to escalate. Recently, a report by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, shedding light on the contentious issue of Waqf-controlled properties. The report reveals that Waqf has taken control of approximately 57,792 government properties across Uttar Pradesh, spanning a vast area of 11,712 acres. This revelation has sparked widespread debate and calls for action.

Key details from the JPC Report on Waqf properties in Uttar Pradesh:
1. Waqf Properties Across Districts in Uttar Pradesh
- Shahjahanpur : 2,589 properties registered under Waqf, out of which 2,371 are government properties.
- Rampur : 3,365 properties claimed by Waqf, with 2,363 being government properties.
- Ayodhya : 3,652 properties claimed, with 2,116 being public properties.
- Jaunpur : Out of 4,167 Waqf properties, 2,296 are government-owned lands.
- Bareilly : Out of 3,499 Waqf properties, 2,000 are on government land.
- Lakhimpur Kheri (1,792), Bulandshaher (1,778), and Fatehpur (1,610)
2. Classification of Properties
The Uttar Pradesh government informed the JPC that most of the disputed properties fall under Class 5 and Class 6 land categories, which are designated as government and Gram Sabha properties.
3. Committee Recommendations
- Increase non-Muslim representation in the Central Waqf Council to ensure balanced decision-making.
- Reevaluate the number and qualifications of tribunal members to expedite case disposal.
4. National Data on Waqf Properties
According to the Ministry of Minority Affairs, there are 8,65,646 Waqf properties registered across India.

- West Bengal : Over 80,000 properties.
- Punjab : 70,994 properties.
- Tamil Nadu : 65,945 properties.
- Karnataka : 61,195 properties.
