Reserve Bank issues 2 numbers to stop fraud in the name of bank calls

Official telephone numbers start with 1600 and 140

New Delhi – The Reserve Bank of India has launched two telephone numbers for banks to use to contact their customers for transactions and promotions. The initiative aims to protect users from fraudulent calls and enhance trust in the legal process.

1. Banks are now required to use telephone numbers starting from 1600 for all transaction-related calls. Similarly, 2 different numbers have been provided for promotional calls and short messages. Numbers starting from 1600 will be used for promotions on banking services, while numbers starting from 140 will be used for calls and short messages offering services like personal loans, credit cards or insurance.

2. This initiative will help users differentiate between genuine bank representatives and false claims made by fraudsters pretending to represent banks. Fraudsters often defraud several people by pretending to be bank representatives. It is expected that this step by the Reserve Bank will provide significant relief to consumers and enhance financial security.
