Guillain-Barré syndrome outbreak in Pune, 22 suspected cases

Pune – A new virus causing Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has reportedly made its way to Pune. Authorities have identified 22 suspected cases of this syndrome, with six patients from Pune city and the rest from other areas. Samples from the suspected patients have been sent for further testing. This rare disease may occur in individuals who have taken certain vaccines, such as those for H1N1 or other uncommon types. While it is a rare condition, GBS is neither highly contagious nor inherently dangerous. Health officials are also conducting screenings in hospitals where these cases have been admitted, according to Healthcare Chief Nina Borade.

What is Guillain-Barré syndrome ?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and in severe cases, life- threatening complications. Though rare, the syndrome can affect individuals of any age.

The virus primarily impacts the nerves, resulting in, Muscle weakness, Pain and reduced sensitivity, Effects on the face, eyes, chest, and body muscles, Temporary paralysis, Breathing difficulties, Severe pain in fingers and toes, Walking issues and Irritability.
