Criticises that some sections of society will never understand the law

Surat (Gujarat) – “I see the Uniform Civil Code as a progressive law. This law will replace various traditional practices. If this law is implemented, it will become a uniform personal law for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. It will apply to matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and maintenance. Uniform Civil Code is a constitutional objective, and it is mentioned in Article 44 of the Constitution. There is no dispute about this. We should be clear on one thing. Enacting this law is a very important step towards national integration and social justice,” said former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and now Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi, while supporting the code. He was speaking at an event here.
Former Chief Justice Gogois said,
1. Goa’s Uniform Civil Code has nothing to do with religion
The Uniform Civil Code is working well in Goa. This law has nothing to do with religion. There is a need to prevent misinformation regarding this law.
2. Supreme Court’s instructions
The Supreme Court has also remarked in five cases related to the right of Muslim women to seek maintenance that the Government should consider a uniform civil code.
3. A Uniform Civil Code is a way to unite the country and resolve the backlog of cases arising from different laws governing civil and personal matters that affect social justice.
4. The Government should not rush, build consensus first
I would request the Government and the MPs not to rush. Create a consensus on this law. Tell the people of this country what exactly this law is about. Once you create a
consensus, people will understand. A section of society will never understand this law. They will pretend not to understand.
