Washington (USA) – Indian citizen Sai Varshit Kandula (21 years old) was sentenced to 8 years in prison for the attack on the White House, the residence of the US President, on 22nd May, 2023. During interrogation, he had said that he wanted to take control of the Government and assassinate President Joe Biden. He had been planning for 6 months to accomplish this.
1. According to the US Department of Justice, the purpose of this attack was to overthrow the democratically elected government of the United States and establish a dictatorship inspired by Nazi ideology.
2. Kandula carried out the attack in a rented truck. He rammed the truck into the fence protecting the White House and President’s Park. After the first impact, he reversed the truck and tried to ram it again. On the second attempt, the truck’s brakes failed and smoke began to come out of the engine.
3. Born in Chandannagar, India, Kandula was a permanent resident of the United States and held a green card (a card issued to non-US citizens for permanent residence).
