Three Muslims arrested for begging in saffron clothing in Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh)

Refused to drink Ganga water when offered

Sohrab, Shahzad Khan and Niaz arrested for begging in saffron

Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh) – Three Muslims, dressed as Hindu monks in saffron attire and begging for alms, were detained by local residents within the jurisdiction of the Kasimabad police station. The locals handed them over to the police, who registered a case and arrested them. They were identified as Sohrab, Shehzad Khan, and Niyaz, all residents of the neighbouring Mau district.

When questioned by locals, the men claimed that begging was their family profession, practiced by their fathers and grandfathers before them. They even asserted their affiliation with the Gorakhnath temple as yogis.

The locals asked them to drink Ganga water to affirm their association with Hindu traditions, but all three refused. Following this, the residents informed the police, who took the three men into custody.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Muslims disguising as Hindu ascetics to beg should be noted, especially considering some target the very Hindu religious sites they now seek alms from.
  • Will those who praise the “Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb” (a supposed cultural harmony between Hindus and Muslims along the banks of the Ganga and Yamuna) speak up about these individuals who refused to drink Ganga water ?
