Stampede of North Indian passengers boarding Gorakhpur bound Antyodaya Express at Bandra (Mumbai)

Mumbai – 9 people were injured, of which 2 are critical, in a massive stampede of North Indian passengers while boarding the Gorakhpur bound Antyodaya Express at Bandra station on October 27 at 5 a.m. This train is fully unreserved. Passengers from Mumbai who were traveling to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh for Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals thronged Bandra station early in the morning to board this train which goes to Uttar Pradesh once a week. There were 2,500 passengers at this station which has a capacity of 1,500. The train, which leaves at 5 a.m., arrived at the station at 2:45 a.m. and the passengers tried to board the train even before it stopped completely at the platform. The railway staff immediately admitted the injured passengers to Bhabha Hospital. After this incident, the opposition criticized the railway minister and the railway administration.

Passengers suffer due to stampede

The huge crowd caused a stampede, and some passengers fell at the station while boarding the train. It was reported that one passenger fractured his thigh, while another broke his arm. The stampede was so severe that the condition of the injured passengers became very miserable. A large amount of blood was seen at the station.

‘Passengers advised not to board a moving train’ : Railway Administration

After this incident, Railway Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek appealed to the passengers not to board the moving train and also said that sufficient trains are available as extra trains have been kept for the vacation period to travel to Uttar Pradesh.

Arvind Sawant, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) faction questioned the railway administration saying, “The railway department should investigate the railway accidents in the last few months. Railway department officials do not even behave properly with the passengers. We have made a demand with the railway administration to increase the number of trains, but they are not starting any additional services.”
