Navi Mumbai – Bangladeshi Head Loaders have been continually rising in numbers at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee’s fruit and vegetable markets in Navi Mumbai. This has led to loss of jobs for Maharatshrian Head Loaders. The Fruit market alone has more than 50% Bangladeshi workers. Even the market committee does not have a factual record of these workers. Though the administration seeks information about the workers employed, traders do not provide actual information. These workers are allowed to reside in the market. These workers are ready to do any job at any wage. Narendra Patil, leader of the Head Loaders Association reacted to the happening, “Decisive action should be taken against these Bangladeshi Head Loaders.” He has recently brought this to the notice of Devendra Fadnavis, the Home Minister of Maharashtra.
The Bangladeshi workers who reside here use illegally procured gas cylinders to cook meals. They work as porters until afternoon and evening onwards sell fruits, vegetables and other produce on the footpath outside the fruit market. Often they quarrel among themselves and even have scuffles.
