New Delhi – The Supreme Court on Friday made strongly worded observations on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case, saying the agency must demonstrate that it is now an “uncaged parrot”. Granting bail to Arvind Kejriwal, who has been incarcerated since 11thMarch, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said the CBI must dispel the notion that it is a caged parrot. The opposition uses the phrase ‘caged parrot’ to refer to the alleged interference of the Union government in the functioning of the agency.
Justice Bhuyan said that the CBI should make all possible efforts to ensure that no one is wrongly arrested. Prolonged imprisonment can deprive a person of their freedom. They have to dispel the public perception that the CBI is a ‘parrot in a cage’. The organization should try to change this image created in the minds of the citizens of the country.
