India intercepts Pakistan-bound ship carrying equipment needed for nuclear missile programme

Uran (Maharashtra) – Indian security agencies and customs officials have intercepted a Pakistan-bound ship suspected of carrying a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine used in the Nuclear and Ballistic Missile Programme from China at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port and seized the equipment. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control which is an automatic machine and does not require human intervention. This was revealed when the security forces examined the seized consignment with the help of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This equipment is used in the development and production of missiles in Pakistan’s nuclear activities.

Nhava Sheva Port officials received confidential information about this from security agencies. Based on that, the officials from security agencies took joint action and intercepted the suspected merchant ship bound for Karachi.

1. The consignment, weighing 22,180 kilograms, was shipped by Taiyuan Mining Import and Export Co Ltd and was meant for Cosmos Engineering in Pakistan.

2. CNC machines used in the missile programmes are manufactured by an Italian company. CNC machines are controlled by a computer and offer efficiency, consistency, and accuracy not possible manually.

3. The seizure of the autoclave used in Pakistan’s missile programme, however, has revealed that Pakistan is involved in illicit trade in missiles and violation of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

4. North Korea used CNC machines in its nuclear programme. One of the important objectives is to prevent the proliferation of goods, including international arms control and military nuclear use. India is active in this.

5. The consignment was shipped from Shanghai JXE Global Logistics Co Ltd.
