Nanjangud (Karnataka) – It is a custom in Nanjangud to celebrate the destruction of Demon Andhakasura by Goddess Parvati and her consort Deity Shiva every year. This year though, some miscreants tried to oppose this celebration by throwing water on the idols of Goddess Parvati and Deity Shiva. The Police have registered a case against the ‘Dalit Sangharsh Samiti’.
1. There is a temple of Deity Kanteshwara at Nanjangudu in Mysuru, Karnataka. Kanteshwar or Nanjundeshwar is considered a form of Deity Shiva. Nanju in Kannada means the one who drinks poison.
2. There is a tradition of celebrating the ‘Andhakasur Vadha’ every year in this temple. Symbolic destruction of the Demon is displayed on this occasion. But this year there was an uproar against this tradition.
3. An organisation called ‘Dalit Sangharsh Samiti’ demanded to stop this tradition. The organization claims that Andhkasura (Mahishasura) was their king and hence their sentiments are hurt through this practice.
