California (US) – Governor Gavin Newsom of the state of California used his veto to block the anti-Hindu bill in the name of anti-casteism. The ‘Hindu American Foundation’ has expressed satisfaction with Governor Gavin Newsom for blocking the bill.

1. The state of California already has laws preventing discrimination based on sex, race, colour, religion, national origin, disability, sexual identity, etc. Hence, there is no need for any new law. Governor Gavin Newsom stated that he would not sign the bill, but use the veto.

2. This bill named ‘SB-403’ was passed by the California Legislature in March 2023. An attempt was made to defame the entire Hindu religion by claiming that ‘certain customs and traditions of Hinduism are discriminatory’. It cleverly suggested that ‘religious practices of Hindus are discriminatory’.

3. The language used in the entire bill was completely discriminatory and created huge misunderstandings about Hinduism and the South Asian Hindu community. Therefore, the ‘American Hindu Foundation’ arranged a big protest in California against this bill. Taking note of this protest, Governor Gavin Newsom blocked the bill.

Editorial Perspective

It is the result of the unity of the Hindus in the US.
