India ends trans-shipment facility to Bangladesh in response to Muhammad Yunus’ remarks

India teaches a lesson to Bangladesh

New Delhi – India has taught a lesson to Bangladesh interim Government’s adviser Muhammad Yunus, who had recently appealed to China to increase its trade with Bangladesh, as the northeastern States of India are landlocked and reliant on Bangladesh to reach the sea. India has now banned Bangladesh’s trade with Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar using Indian land. This will stop Bangladesh’s imports as well as exports.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has issued a notification in this regard on April 8th . It states that trans-shipment facility for export cargo to Bangladesh has been closed. The notification dated June 29th 2020 in this regard has been cancelled. Through this notification, Bangladesh was allowed to export to other countries through the Indian region.

Till now, Bangladesh’s exports were transported in containers or closed trucks to other countries’ ports and these containers or trucks were transported to other countries through Indian soil, i.e. through Indian land customs stations. Through this facility, it could easily export to Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar.

Editorial Perspective

If India could do this, why was it not done earlier ? Why doesn’t India pressurise Bangladesh using similar means ?
