Mumbai – Ganesh Idols are carried in processions from various workshops in Mumbai in view of the forthcoming Ganesh Festival by the festival committees for public celebration of the festival. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Bridge Department, which was keeping mum about the dangerous conditions of bridges till the processions started, has now declared thirteen bridges as dangerous on the routes of such processions and issued perfunctory instructions, to take care while using these bridges and not to halt on those bridges for long.

Among the bridges declared as dangerous, there are more railway bridges such as Mahalakshmi Steel Railway Overbridge, Carol Rail Overbridge (Prabhadevi), Tilak Railway Overbridge (Dadar), Currey Road Railway Overbridge, Marine Lines Railway Overbridge, Sandhurst Road Railway Overbridge, French Rail Overbridge, Kennedy Railway Bridge, Falkland Railway Overbridge, Bellasis Bridge near Mumbai Central, and Ghatkopar Railway Overbridge.

BMC (Bridge Dept) has also declared bridges at Currey Road Railway Station, Chinchpokli Railway Station, and Mandalik Bridge as unfit to carry more than 16 tonnes of weight at a time.

Editorial Viewpoint

Only warning citizens does not end the responsibility of the Administration. The Administration should also explain reasons for not completing the work before the Ganesh Festival and assign responsibility in case of a mishap while undertaking all possible measures to avoid a mishap.
