Pakistan to stop crude oil imports from Russia

  • Decision taken due to lack of technology for refining crude oil
  • Pakistan’s another failed attempt to compete with India

Islamabad (Pakistan) – Financially bankrupt Pakistan has now received another blow. It can no longer import the crude oil it receives from Russia. Pakistan had to take this decision because of the limited success of Pakistani factories in refining crude oil. The country also had to bear a lot of financial loss due to this. After the Russia-Ukraine war, many countries imposed sanctions on Russia. Still, India bought crude oil from Russia. This had a positive effect on the Indian economy. This led the Western countries to criticise India, yet India remained firm in its stance. Pakistan also took this stance and decided to import crude oil from Russia, but its attempt to compete with India failed.

1. To avoid angering Russia, Pakistan has initially put a hold on crude oil imports. Gradually it will be permanently banned.

2. This agreement was signed between Pakistan and Russia just 3 months ago. It was widely publicised by the then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as if it was a diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

3. But now, the decision taken by Pakistan has become a subject of ridicule.

4. As Pakistan’s oil refineries use 60-year-old technology, it is impossible for them to refine Russian oil. The country barely manages to refine the oil imported from Arab countries.

5. Refineries have expressed fear that if they try to refine Russian oil, the refining of Arab oil will get affected too.

Editorial Viewpoints

  • Pakistan has forgotten its own merits while competing with India and hence it is disgraced.
  • The creation of Pakistan is based on hatred. This hatred is going to end its existence one day. Pakistani rulers must realise this and the sooner the better.
