New Delhi – According to a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Election Watch (NEW, based on the pre-election affidavits of about 4,001 out of the 4,333 MLAs from 28 States and 2 Union Territories of India, 4,001 MLAs have a total wealth of about Rs 54,545 crore. This amount is more than the total budget of Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim for the year 2023-24 totalling to Rs 49,103 crore. The average value of the assets owned by an MLA is Rs 13.63 crore. These MLAs belong to 84 political parties including independent candidates.
D K Shivakumar, the MLA and Deputy Chief Minister of the Congress-led Karnataka, has the highest wealth at around Rs 1,413 crore. He is currently the richest MLA in the country. 95 Independent MLAs have a total of Rs 2,845 crore. The total wealth of 1,356 MLAs belonging to the BJP is around 16,234 crore and the wealth of 719 MLAs of Congress is 15,798 crore. The total share of the wealth of the MLAs of these two major parties is 58.73%.

These people’s representatives have accumulated so much wealth in such a short time. An ordinary person can never hope to accumulate such an amount even after working on a salary or by running a business for 40 years. Hence, it is clear to the people that the root cause of this is corruption ! |
