Convicted murderer proved innocent in Japan after 47 years in prison

The Japanese government will award Rs 12 crore in damages

Tokyo (Japan) – Iwao Hakamata, an 89-year-old man convicted of murder in Japan has been awarded a $12 million in damages by the Japanese government after serving 47 years in prison. False evidence was presented to prove the charges, he was acquitted after this revelation.

1. In the year 1966, Hakamata was convicted for the murder of their chief, his wife, and their 2 children, setting fire to their house and stealing 200,000 yen (Japanese currency).

2. In September last year, the court in the city of Shizuoka in Japan acquitted him of all charges.

3. Hideko, the sister of Hakamata, worked hard for years to collect evidence to prove her brother’s innocence. Subsequently, the court resumed the hearing in 2014 and granted bail to the hakamatas.

4. Hakamata had previously denied all accusations; but later they accepted the charges. At the time of the hearing, it emerged that the Hakamata had been beaten and was forced to confess the crime.
