Chennai – “There has been no incident of forced conversion in the State of Tamil Nadu in the past many years. There is nothing illegal about missionaries spreading Christianity. It cannot be called wrong unless they resort to unlawful means to do so. Also, people have the right to choose the religion they want to follow”, such an affidavit has been submitted by the DMK Government of Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court. BJP leader and advocate Mr Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a plea in this regard. The Government took above stand about it.
1. The Tamil Nadu Government has opposed advocate Upadhyay’s demand for a CBI inquiry into the forceful conversion case and direction to the Law Commission of India to draft an anti-conversion law.
2. The Government further said that there is a fear of misuse of anti-conversion law against minorities. There has been no incident of forced conversion in Tamil Nadu for the past few years. The Government has claimed that the petition filed by advocate Upadhyay is against Christianity and its ideology.
3. The Government said in the affidavit that Article 25 of the Constitution of India guarantees every citizen the right to propagate his religion. Therefore, the acts of missionaries spreading Christianity cannot be seen as something against the law.
