1. The figures from the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment show that 8,32,339 Pakistani citizens went overseas for work in 2022, the most since 2016 and the third-highest tally on record. Saudi Arabia was the most preferred destination, attracting 5,14,909.
2. Ahmad Jamal, an immigration lawyer in Quetta, said the actual number of people leaving is much larger. Not just the youth but people in their 40s and 50s are also trying to move out of the country.
3. The inflation rate in Pakistan is 27.6%. While the per capita income of the average Pakistani is below $1,658 (Pak Rs 4,08,000). Experts say that Pakistan’s youth are moving overseas because of the dire condition of the country.
4. Increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan too, is driving the citizens overseas. 90,000 skilled workers were among those who moved overseas last year.
