
New Delhi – Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the two peeths of Jyotish at Badrinath and Sharda at Dwarka, renounced His body on the afternoon of 11th September at the Jhoteshwar temple in Narsinghpur District of Madhya Pradesh. He was 99 years old and had been ill for a long time. His 99th birthday was celebrated recently on 3rd September. Many of His disciples and devotees were with Him when he took last breath. Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopananda Saraswati had a lot of contributions to the Court battle for the restoration of the Ram temple.

Brief Introduction of Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand SaraswatiShankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati was born in the Upadhyay family in the Dighori village of Seoni, Madhya Pradesh. His parents named Him ‘Pothiram’. At the age of 9, He left home and devoted Himself to serving the Dharma. He went to Kashi and studied Ved Shastras from the great Saint Dharma Samrat Shri Karpatri Swamiji Maharaj. After participating in the freedom movement in 1942 (i.e., at the age of 19), He became famous as ‘Krantikari Sadhu’. He also served a jail sentence of 9 months in Varanasi and 6 months in Madhya Pradesh. In 1950, Brahmaleen Shankaracharya Swami Brahmananda Saraswati of Jyotishpeeth gave Him Brahmadanda and initiated Him into ‘sanyas’. It was then that He was named as Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. He became the Shankaracharya in 1981. |
