
Guwahati (Assam) – The Guwahati High Court has issued notice to the Municipality on a petition challenging the complete ban on selling beef in Assam’s Sonari Municipal area. The High Court gave this order during the hearing of the petition filed by Mujib Rohman and another. The Municipality has banned the sale of beef completely in the Municipal area from 15th July 2022 as per Section 8 of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

The petitioner has said that their business of butchering has been going on since the days of their forefathers in the said area; the Act in question also does not state a complete ban. The Act would include allotment of an appropriate site to carry out the business, a complete ban is not contemplated as that would amount to infringing the right to carry on business.
