New Delhi – Supreme Court (SC) reprimanded Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police in a hearing during Lakhimpur violence case saying, “Are the accused murderers called by sending notices ? Is it the same way we treat other accused too ? On what grounds have you not taken the accused in custody yet ?”

The Court stated, “The violence has claimed 8 lives. The law is the same for all the accused. We hope that the State will take necessary steps due to the sensitivity of the issue.”

The Court hinted at handing over the probe to an alternate investigation agency. The Court also made it clear that till this agency has not started the investigation, the Director-General of Police will be responsible for the investigation. The Court ordered to protect all the evidence.
