Release the caged parrot (CBI) from the cage : Madras HC directs the Centre

Editorial comments

  • The statements made by the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court should be taken seriously.
  • What the Court feels is more or less what the general public also feels. Hence, the public expects the Court only to undertake this task.

Chennai – The Madras High Court calling the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) a ‘caged parrot, directed the Central Government to make it independent. The Court observed that the CBI should be made more independent like the Election Commission of India and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. The CBI can be autonomous only when it is given statutory status, the Court stated.

1. The Court stated that the current status of CBI needs to be changed and more autonomy be ensured.

2. During the hearing of the allocation of coalfield licences scam case of 2013, the Supreme Court had called the CBI a ‘parrot in a cage’. BJP, the opposition had accused Congress of controlling the CBI at that time.
