The Centre should also inform the public what caused the deaths of so many prisoners. If the deaths were due to the torture in the custody, then the public should be informed about what actions were taken by the authorities against the responsible Police officers.

New Delhi – Nityanand Rai, Union Minister of State for Home informed the Lok Sabha that 348 prisoners died and 1,189 others were found to be tortured under Police custody in the last 3 years.

A report by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) states that 136 people in 2018, 112 in 2019 and 100 in 2020 died under Police custody. 542 people in 2018, 411 in 2019 and 236 in 2020 were tortured under Police custody.
