Gauhati (Assam) – Assam State Government proposes to have at the most two children to avail the benefits under the Government schemes. This policy will be implemented gradually. This is not applicable for the schemes which are offered by the Central Government, explained Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. (If Assam Government can do this for the welfare of people, the Central Government should also have such policies. At the same time, all the State Governments can also implement such policies in their States. – Editor)

CM Sarma added, “There are some schemes for which we cannot impose the two-child norm, such as, availing free admission in schools and colleges or for houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana; however, if the State Government initiates any scheme in future, then the two-child norm will be implemented”.
