30% of cases across India tied to Jamaat event : Government

New Delhi – Around 30% of the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 in India are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat event held in mid-March at Nizamuddin Markaz in New Delhi, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on 18th April underlining how the event contributed significantly to the case-load of 23 States including those with a high burden of the infection.

Of the total 14,378 confirmed cases of Covid-19, 4,291 or 29.8% were linked to the Islamic religious congregation (as of 18th April). These cases are spread across 23 States and UTs, which include most of high burden States, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said. He added that 80% of cases in Tamil Nadu, 63% cases in Delhi, 79% cases in Telangana, 59% cases in Uttar Pradesh and 61% cases in Andhra Pradesh are related to the event.

India has reported 47 deaths since 25.4.2020 night, the Union Health Ministry said.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 20,177 while 5,913 people (21.96 per cent) were cured and discharged, and 1 patient has migrated, the Health Ministry said. According to the Ministry data, the highest number of confirmed cases is from Maharashtra at 7,628, followed by Gujarat (3,071), Delhi (2,625), Rajasthan (2,083), Madhya Pradesh (2,096) and Uttar Pradesh (1,843).
