Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Four people were killed and over 100 injured in violence between two groups of Muslims over an Ijtima event in Tongi city of Bangladesh on December 17th. According to the Police, seven people were killed on both sides. One of the groups belonged to Maulana Saad, the head of the Tablighi Jamaat in India, and the other to Maulana Zubair from Bangladesh. The administration has deployed troops here.

Violence broke out between two groups of Muslims over hosting the Ijtima event – one group belonged to Tablighi Jamaat in India and the other to Maulana Zubair from Bangladesh.

1. According to the information given by the Police, Maulana Saad’s supporters want to organize a 5-day Ijtima at Tongi Ground from Friday, December 20th. Maulana Zubair’s supporters do not want the Jamaatwala to organize the Ijtima here. Therefore, Zubair’s supporters had already taken control of the Ijtima Ground. Maulana Saad’s supporters reached the ground in the early hours of December 17th. After this, the clashes began.

2. After former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh, Zubair’s supporters are demanding that the Ijtima here be held in one phase instead of two. Zubair’s supporters have accused Hasina’s party of holding the Ijtima in two phases to divide Muslims. They have also accused Maulana Saad’s supporters of being agents of India.
