Nagpur – Senior jurist and Rajya Sabha member Ujjwal Nikam stated that the widely circulated report claiming that terrorist Ajmal Kasab had demanded mutton biryani while in prison was deliberately planted by him. Nikam made the remarks while speaking at an award ceremony in Nagpur.
Explaining the purpose behind the move, he said:
1. During Kasab’s trial, on Raksha Bandhan day I had a rakhi tied on my wrist. When Kasab asked me about it, I explained the significance of Raksha Bandhan to him. Just then, the judge took his seat on the bench.
2. After I told the judge about my conversation with Kasab, he lowered his head and appeared to wipe his eyes. The media persons present outside the courtroom immediately flashed headlines saying, ‘Tears in Kasab’s eyes.’ To ensure that sympathy was not created for Kasab, I went to the media and told them that Kasab had asked for mutton biryani. Soon afterwards, that news began to be widely reported.
3. The next day, Kasab’s lawyers asked in court about the previous day’s incident. I said, He has come from Pakistan and must have been eating meat every day. Then wouldn’t he have asked for biryani? Ask him. Kasab was not fully aware of what was being discussed in the courtroom. Thinking that the discussion was about giving him biryani, he immediately nodded his head. As a result, reports began appearing that ‘Kasab had asked for biryani’. Whether he had actually asked for biryani or not, only he would know.”
