Mumbai – Over the past three years, it has come to light that 181 colleges affiliated with various universities across the State lack essential educational facilities such as qualified faculty, laboratories, libraries and even the minimum required student strength. The highest number of such colleges is in the Nagpur, Amravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune divisions, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said in a written reply to a starred question on 9 July.

The starred question was raised in the Legislative Council by MLAs Niranjan Davkhare, Pravin Darekar, Prasad Lad and other legislators.

According to Government information, inspections conducted over the past three years found that despite being affiliated with universities, 82 colleges in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 41 in the Nagpur division, 24 in the Pune division, 23 in the Amravati division, 9 in the Nashik division and 2 in the Konkan division lacked the required infrastructure and qualified teaching staff.

University-level action underway against colleges violating the rules !

In this regard, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said that the infrastructure and facilities of such colleges are verified under Sections 108, 117 and 120 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. Action is underway at the university level to withdraw or cancel the affiliation of colleges that have failed to meet the prescribed criteria.

Editorial Perspective

Running colleges solely for profit despite lacking adequate facilities and qualified professors is nothing short of a betrayal of students' future. The licences of such colleges should be revoked immediately and criminal cases should be registered against those responsible !
