Shiv Sainiks booked for conducting bell-ringing protest near Durgadi fort in Kalyan

Shiv Sainiks detained by the Police

Kalyan (Thane District) – To demand entry for Hindu devotees into the temple located on the historic Durgadi fort and the removal of restrictions imposed on Hindu devotees, members of Shiv Sena and other devout Hindu organisations held a bell-ringing protest near the fort entrance at Lal Chowki in Kalyan. A Police deployment of 200 personnel was stationed to prevent any untoward incident. The Police stopped the Shiv Sainiks heading towards Durgadi fort using barricades. During the namaz period, not a single Shiv Sainik was allowed to proceed towards the site. The Police detained the protesting Shiv Sainiks and took them to the Police station for preventive action. Cases were also registered against them.

During the protest, Hindus raised slogans such as, “Durgadi fort belongs to us by right.” (Hindus should realise that this right will truly be secured only in a Hindu Rashtra and should act accordingly! – Editor) Protesters carried placards stating, “Hindu devotees must be granted entry into Shri Durgadevi Temple; it is our right as Hindus.” The environment was charged with enthusiasm and valour as protesters dressed in white traditional attire and saffron caps participated in large numbers.

What is the issue?

On the day of Bakri Eid, the District Administration imposes restrictions on devotees visiting the Durgadi Devi Temple for darshan. Bal Thackeray had opposed this decision. Since 1982, following the directives of the Shiv Sena chief, the then District Chief Anand Dighe initiated the bell-ringing protest at this location, and it continues even today. This dispute has been ongoing for more than 50 years.

Editorial Perspective

  • When a devout Hindu government is in power in the State, why is there a double standard of permitting Muslims to offer namaz while preventing Hindus from entering a temple?
  • Preventing Hindus from accessing the fort is unjust to the Maharashtra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
